Diocese of Wagga Wagga Takes Up NATSICC Anointing Packages

The Diocese of Wagga Wagga has answered NATSICC's call for clergy to embrace the Anointing Packages program, with parishes across the diocese now set to receive packs that bring together Catholic tradition and First Nations spirituality for the Sacrament of the Sick.

Clergy from six parishes will receive packages: Yenda-Yoogali-Hanwood, Leeton, Griffith, Junee, Tumbarumba and Cathedral parish.

Each package includes an Aboriginal print stole, a Jerusalem olive wood hand cross for the patient, an olive wood heart for a family member or visitor, an olive wood rosary bracelet with a prayer instruction booklet, a small container of cotton wool for anointing, prayer booklets for both priest and patient or family, and a tea candle — items designed to offer comfort and cultural familiarity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receiving the sacrament.

Sally FitzGerald, NATSICC Councillor and coordinator of the program, said the Diocese of Wagga Wagga's uptake reflects exactly what the initiative set out to do.

"This initiative is yet another way NATSICC is working to bring Faith and Culture together," Mrs FitzGerald said.
