Cultural Learning Kits Strengthening Connections in Tasmania

TAS

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council (NATSICC) is pleased to share the positive impact of grant funding provided to CatholicCare Tasmania to support the development and distribution of Cultural Learning Kits.

The kits have been distributed across a range of youth and Out of Home Care services, creating opportunities for young people and staff to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in meaningful and respectful ways.

Designed with a strong focus on Tasmanian Aboriginal perspectives, the kits include culturally significant items such as clapsticks, kelp baskets, ochre, animal skins, books by Aboriginal authors, Aboriginal painted crosses and weaving materials. Each kit is supported by a guide explaining the cultural significance of the items, along with learning resources to support safe and informed engagement.

Early feedback has highlighted the value of the initiative in strengthening cultural understanding, encouraging connection through storytelling and supporting cultural pride. One youth worker reflected that the kit helped them understand culture in a new way and demonstrated how stories can bring people together and keep culture strong.

This initiative is a wonderful example of how NATSICC grant funding can support practical, community-based projects that strengthen cultural learning, promote understanding and create opportunities for meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. NATSICC congratulates CatholicCare Tasmania and all partners involved in bringing this project to life.
