2010 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday Celebrations
2010's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday was celebrated across Austrlia using the Liturgy Resources that NATSICC developed for the day. The events showcased in the above slideshow are from Townsville, Mt. Isa and Werribee.
Joni McCourt describes the celebrations in Townsville:
"Indigenous Catholic Council held their NAIDOC Dinner on the 2nd July. This year we were fortunate to be entertained by a local, Boori Monty Pryor. It was a relaxed and enjoyable evening with Boori presenting his new book and the background and inspiration for the story. He entertained the audience with tales of growing up in Garbutt. This year’s theme for NAIDOC was ‘Unsung Heroes”. Bishop Michael Putney acknowledged and presented Aunty Cathy Gibson, Gladys Sailor and John Pryor with a certificate in appreciation for their dedication and continued support at St Teresa’s and in the community. Also the Ngulumburu Boonyah Dancers entertained the audience with Indigenous dances and the meaning of each dance. It was a wonderful evening and enjoyed by all.
Elizabeth Dempsey on events in Mt. Isa:
Mount Isa Aboriginal & Islander
Catholic Council celebrated an opening and closing mass for NAIDOC.
The elders of AICC had a reflection on “Black Mother” and “Grandmother”.
Black Mother was done at the opening mass and Grandmother on the closing
mass. The entire congregation at both masses enjoyed the reflection
time. Peter Smith was the Leader at both masses and Dolly and Liz were
Eucharistic Ministers. We also did the Eucharistic Prayer at each mass.
After the masses everyone came up to us and said how they enjoyed the
mass. We also have Aboriginal and Islander music playing. After the
masses we then went to the Civic Centre for the raising and lowering
of the Flags. People from the congregation also came to the Flag raising
and lowering.
